Moorestown Friends Takes First in Math Competition

MFS eight graders achieve success at MATHCOUNTS competition as a team and individually.

The  (MFS) Middle School MATHCOUNTS team won the Ocean chapter competition held Feb. 4 at Ocean County College.

The team of Lilla Butterworth (Merchantville), Kieran McMenamin (Burlington), Samuel Milligan (Cherry Hill) and Joshua Murdy (Hainesport) placed first among 10 teams. Joshua Murdy placed second overall in the individual competition and Samuel Milligan placed 10th. Five other MFS mathletes competed as individuals: Zachary Day (Marlton), Anisha Pande (Hainesport), Priya Patel (Cinnaminson), Braeden Sloan (Moorestown) and Margaux Vellucci (Hainesport). All the participants are eighth graders.

The MFS team and Murdy now advance to the state MATHCOUNTS competition to be held Saturday, March 10, in Somerset.

The team was coached by middle school math Teacher Kathi Bernard, along with volunteer coach and MFS senior Karan Hiremath (Columbus).

Nationwide, more than four million students have competed in the MATHCOUNTS program since its inception in 1983. More than 2,500 students throughout the state will enroll in the program this year. Nationally, about 350,000 students participate annually. Participation allows the students to be coached in accelerated topics such as probability, statistics, linear algebra and polynomials.
