NJ Insiders: Booker Strongest Candidate Dems Can Field Against Christie

Patch's inaugural Blue Garden State survey asked influential state Democrats to weigh in with their thoughts on the Newark mayor.

New Jersey Democratic insiders believe Newark Mayor Cory Booker poses the strongest threat to Gov. Chris Christie in the 2013 gubernatorial election.

In Patch’s inaugural Blue Garden State survey, nearly 200 influential Democrats in the state were asked to weigh in with their thoughts on a potential Booker candidacy. The local leaders surveyed include state senators, mayors, town council members and local party chairs.

Of the 16 Democrats who responded to the survey, 68 percent agreed with the statement “Cory Booker would be the strongest Democratic candidate against Gov. Christie.” Some 31 percent of respondents disagreed with the statement.

Democratic insiders were also surveyed on their thoughts about statements Booker made in an appearance on Meet the Press in May. Booker criticized attacks on GOP presidential hopeful Mitt Romney’s work with private equity firm Bain Capital by President Barack Obama’s campaign.

"I have to just say from a very personal level, I’m not about to sit here and indict private equity,” Booker said during his Meet the Press appearance.  “To me, it’s just we’re getting to a ridiculous point in America. Especially that I know I live in a state where pension funds, unions and other people invest in companies like Bain Capital. If you look at the totality of Bain Capital’s record, they’ve done a lot to support businesses, to grow businesses. … This kind of stuff is nauseating to me on both sides. It’s nauseating to the American public. Enough is enough. Stop attacking private equity, stop attacking Jeremiah Wright."

Patch’s Blue Garden State survey asked Democrats whether or not they agreed with the statement “Cory Booker’s defense of bankers and Wall Street could hurt him with New Jersey liberals if he were to run for governor.” Of the 16 Democrats who answered the survey question, 31 percent agreed with the statement, while 69 percent disagreed with it.

The Blue Garden State survey posed a similar question regarding the impact of Booker’s statements on moderates. Of the 15 Democrats who responded to the survey, 73 percent agreed with the statement “Cory Booker’s defense of bankers and Wall Street could help him with New Jersey moderates if he were to run for governor.” Some 27 percent of respondents disagreed with the statement.

Earlier this summer, Patch invited Democratic and Republican state leaders to participate in regular surveys about their thoughts on national and statewide issues. These leaders include state Senators, mayors, town council members and local party chairs. To become an insider, email Mike Pignataro at mike@patch.com or Jacklyn Corley at jacklyn.corley@patch.com.

200 surveys were sent and only 16 responded!!! That's not a very comprehensive poll. Of the 16 who responded only 68% (or 11 Democrats) felt he was a strong candidate for Governor! I wouldn't call that resounding support statewide! I would be curious to know who those supporters are...do they have the influence and/or money to push Booker past a tough campaigner like Christie?

I think Christie's record will speak for itself. NJ Unemployment rate keeps going up. NJ taxes keep going up, the highest along side of NY and Conn. Major Companies keep bailing out of NJ ie: Hoffman LaRoche.
The Roche case shows that this formula is simplistic nonsense, and that there is much more to it. Note, first, that Roche had already moved its top executives and its sales and marketing operations to San Francisco, which has higher taxes than New Jersey. The work it now does in Nutley will move to Switzerland and Germany, two more places where taxes are higher than here.
These facts are not likely to penetrate the governor's conviction that lower taxes are the holy grail. President George W. Bush promised his tax cuts would create a jobs boom, and the strategy failed miserably, leaving behind only a mountain of debt. Now Mitt Romney promises more of the same. This stuff is baked into the GOP's DNA
Lets see, he has been in office as long as the President has and NJ goes backwards, why the country TRIES to go forward even with the NON support of the GOP Congress...Chris Christie, NJ & YOU perfect together??? WE think NOT

I liked Booker with his clean up the city, new approach, and enthusiasm. It was great that he tried to save someone in a fire. But he's done nothing for Newark. The State and federal government have poured over a billion dollars into the city and you still have a dangerous, crime-infested city with a horrible economy going nowhere.

Compare that with Giuliani's success. He came to New York with the city like American Gangster, prostitutes on 42nd street, heroin and drug traffickiong, weekly if not daily murders in Harlem, mob bosses dividing the city and now 20 years later, it is one of the leading cities in the world. Walk in midtown at 11 at night, it's safe, take your children to 42nd street, go to Harlem but don't think about buying a house there because they cost in the millions. Abandoned buildings, you don't see them anymore because real estate is at a premium and developers are looking for new properties.

It's not just Republicans. Bill Clinton did a wonderful job reducing the welfare system and balancing a budget. But Booker, other than being a nice guy with a lot of enthusiasm who happens to be Afro-American, I don't know what he's done.

@ Bobby 5000~ Guliani had the luxury of increasing the size of the NYPD whereas Booker has had to lay-off police officers as a result of a reduction in taxes forced upon the towns by Chris Christie. Booker is doing a great job in lieu of the reduction in force he has had to contend with.

Eyes wide shut...Maybe NJ is going backward, but if you compare Chris Christie's (R) policies with Cory Booker's (D), the two are almost indistinguishable! Many corporations have been moving to Newark, but they receive huge tax subsidies to do so! Cory Booker has gone head-to-head with unions (police and teachers) in just six years as Mayor and is not well-liked by many constituents within his own city! As disappointed as many voters are with Christie, I don't believe Cory Booker is the answer New Jersey voters are looking for!

We moved here from Essex County and while neither Booker or Christie are perfect the fact is they are both in the jobs they belong in right now. It won't be easy to turn Newark around but Booker has been a breath of fresh air after decades of corruption. And he is smart and hopefully can make Newark a city that works.

Christie has more to do but he, too, cleaned out a good deal of the corrupt mess and I hope is given a second term so that he can move on toward trimming the very high cost of living in NJ and I hope he devotes more time to cleaning up the civil service mess. No one should have two or three civil service jobs and if he would stop that, unemployment would go down because if he insisted, only candidates selected by merit would push out the double and triple dippers who we just don't need and can't afford. No one should be making $100 K to sit on any State board and no one can possibly hold down two or three jobs and do any of them competently.

So maybe give these guys another term because in their own quite different ways they have made some progress. Let's now ask them for more.

At least McGreevey revamped the Motor Vehicle Commission and finally brought EZ Pass to New Jersey. Today's report states unemployment is higher than ever at 10% and Christie says the figures aren't accurate. My company laid off almost one third of it's staff a year ago and only one of those people has found a job. Chrisite has done nothing but hurt this state and I feel sorry for the people that can't seem to realize it. The only numbers that aren't accurate are ones that say Christie is doing a good job.

Oh if we are going back in time Icecream Man, then really Bush Sr and Ollie North are responsible for 9/11 as they were ring masters of Iran Contra. I think Drug smuggling, drug dealing and illegal arms dealing are a lil bit bigger then some tryst with an intern.

@hrhppg see, if I took the Liberal Path one could blame all that on Carter and his failed administration and failed attempt to get the Hostages out of Iran. But, in this instance there was nothing good that came out of Iran Contra and they deserve to take a hit. But, since it is a FACT the Clinton had opportunity to NAIL Bin Laden on his watch, 9/11 is still on Clinton's back plain and simple.

Wow. Christie has done a terrible job. And Booker is just another out of touch liberal. Things are never going to improve in this state with such terrible representation as this. Steve Lonegan, NJ's own Elmer Fudd. Don't think so.

Problem also lays in Washington. Menedez and Lautenberg have down absolutely nothing for this state as far as getting tax dollars back into the state. Menedez can't see past Hispanic vote and Lautenberg, well, we should be happy that he can even see.

As far as Christie goes. How do you clean up after Corzine, screwed corporations with high corporate taxes. One last note for those genius talking about Roche leaving Nutley. Problem with Roche is not the taxes in NJ or NJ as a whole. The problem is that they have a very week pipeline of drugs. Most of their drugs will be going generic and hence they will be losing millions of dollars. They can't afford to keep both an east coast and west coast campus. The west coast campus is a newer upgraded campus as are the ones over seas.

So don't blame Christie for that, if you don't have a product to sell how do you expect them to stay.

And neither Lautenberg or Menendez are whiz bang representatives of the peope of this State. They are both too plugged into the business as usual crowd and seem to take care of themselves rather than We the People.

If you think we are taxed a lot now, wait till we really have to redistribute the wealth and our taxes are going to sky rocket so we can dump the money into the bowels of camden and newark. He'll say what ever he can to get votes in those two cities. Before you attack groups, you need to do your homework. I WORK for the State. I know first-hand where a lot of money is going - into the hands of the ADMINISTRATORS - NOT the unions. Christy Whitman STOLE over $500 million from our pension fund. She promised it would be repaid. Well, not only has it NOT been repaid, they still aren't paying ANY of their share of our pensions AND the union workers were ordered by Chris Christie to pay back our own money that was stolen from us!! Yeah, there's real leadership! I call it embezzlement. There is NO reason this state is in the condition it's in other than waste by the administration and padding their own pockets. So, don't tell me it's the union's fault, especially when the unions haven't had ANY pay raise in over 3 years and have had our pension stolen.

If New Jersey legislators were smart, they would enact "open carry" legislation.

Enabling citizens, trained in the use of firearms would lead to a DECREASE in crime.

There are 40 right to carry states. 37 states have "shall issue" laws, requiring that carry permits be issued to applicants who meet uniform standards established by the state legislature.

Here's the dirty secret the liberals and Democrats don't want reported: States with right to carry have less crime than states like New Jersey with draconian gun laws.

Comment_arrow

John Hayden

5:36 pm on Tuesday, August 21, 2012

Actually, 40 states are "shall issue" or no permit required. Only 8 are "may issue" (HI, CA, NY, MA, CT, MD, NJ, DE) and 1 "no issue" (IL). AL is technically "may issue" but is "shall issue" in practice.

NJ will never willingly pass "shall issue" carry. It will have to be dragged, kicking and screaming, by the courts to recognize the rights of our citizens. NJ should be treated like AL and MS were in the 1960's when those states abridged the rights of their citizens with the Jim Crow laws.

Those Dixiecrats eventually morphed into Republicans. The GOP was happy to court and recruit the former racist Democrats (former Democrats but still racist). Southern Republicans and southern Democrats overwhelmingly voted against the civil rights legislation of the Democrat, LBJ. By the way, the GOP of 1964 was not a rabid crazy rightwing nut party as it is today. Northern Republicans and Democrats overwhelmingly voted for the civil rights legislation. It was more a regional thing than a party thing.

Gov. Christie is enjoying the top of his game at the moment. The bs is flowing smoothly, the Jersey attitude is entertaining the nation (at least the press) and the leaks in the dam continue to be plugged without a lot of fanfare so far. But, by this time next year, all of Gov. Christie's illusions as to how his policies have improved NJ will have gone poof. Voters are going to want some proof that state taxes are going down, not just being passed on to some other government entity to pass onto the taxpayers. You can't give anyone tax relief when you still can't pay your current commitments. Christie is successfully demonstrating he is no different from past governors, just more entertaining, or embarrassing. In a state where politicians aren’t much more than egotistical and greedy numbers runners for hopelessly corrupt party bosses, Cory Booker stands tall as his own man. Booker will not run against Christie. Makes no sense. He's young and has time, so why run against a strong incumbent? Just wait for Christie to run for POTUS in 2016 (where he will lose to Jeb Bush and a Super PAC machine) and take his place when the GOP runs a lesser-known and more vulnerable candidate.

B@B, thanks for the laugh...if all the "right wingers" left NJ from where would your tax base come? Why don't you move to Sacramento or Detroit? You can get a house cheap in Detroit at this time of the year. Ha ha ha.

Democrats are the party of hate, class warfare and race baiting. It helps them pretend that their policies aimed at helping haven't been the miserable failures they are. Detroit and camden are great examples. What were once thriving metropolitan areas are now taxpayer subsidized battlegrounds. What drove them to their demise? Hint they have been and still are governed by Democrats. I just love facts!!

the biggest MORON in this state is CHRIS CHRISTIE. He's a liar and a bully. He claims he is the only one who can do anything. News flash, it dosent matter WHAT the democrats put forward, Christie will vote against it just because they are DEMOCRATs. He's lies constantly about EVERYTHING! I crossed party lines to vote for him, had not choice, I could not vote Corzine back in. I consider that the absolute biggest mistake of my life! The only way this idiot can argue with anyone is to call them names. Has he looked in the mirror lately? Every thing this guy does is to further his own agenda. Must have been quite a shock when idiot Rommney chose that other idiot Ryan as his running mate!

Fun fact for the day . . . .

Missouri Republican congressman and US Senate candidate Todd Akin -- who infamously said a few days ago, when speaking against a raped woman's right to obtain an abortion: “If it’s a legitimate rape, the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down” -- is a current member of the House Committee on Science, Space and Technology.

These are the same people who deny the existence of climate change and global warming (in the face of near consensus by the international scientific community regarding their existence).

Fun Fact 2

More important, Obama’s record as a state senator was not merely pro-choice, but radically pro-abortion. His voting record indicates that he does not believe infants deserve protection even once they have emerged from the womb if they are deemed to be below the age of viability, and he did in fact, three times, vote to keep a form of infanticide legal.
