No Book Cops Here: Turn Overdue Fines Into Food

Moorestown Library's Food for Fines turns tardiness into community assistance.

Embarrassed by library overdue fines? Turn your fines into food for your neighbors in need.

We’ve all been there—you’re cleaning out your car after a summer road trip, and suddenly, from deep beneath the passenger’s seat appears that library book you thought you returned months ago.

What do you do now? Sneak by the library in the dead of night and throw it in the bookdrop while no one is looking? Break open your piggy bank and hope there’s enough cash in there to cover the overdue fine? Shove the book back under the car seat and vow never to show your face in the library again?!

So far, the idea has proven to be a terrific win-win-win for the library, Live Civilly and library borrowers. The library is getting back many items that have been overdue for a long time. is getting much-needed supplies to feed our neighbors in need. And library users are getting their borrowing privileges reinstated for the cost of a jar of peanut butter or a can of peas, all while getting the warm, fuzzy feeling that comes from doing a good deed.

So take a good look under those car seats and then swing by the Moorestown Library with your overdue materials and some food to donate—now is your chance to do a good deed for yourself and others!
