Police: Philly Man Asked Cop for Directions, Attacked Him

Maple Shade Police say the man was driving erratically when he suddenly went after the officer.

A Philadelphia man was arrested after he asked a Maple Shade police officer for directions, then attacked him earlier this month, according to police.

Police said Robert S. Carbo, 52, was driving down East Main Street around 9:45 a.m. Nov. 5, when he suddenly stopped, rolled down his window and asked a passing Maple Shade officer for directions to the police station. The officer told Carbo to pull into an adjacent parking lot to talk.

The officer then checked the mobile data terminal in his cruiser and determined Carbo's license was expired and registration suspended.

Carbo continued west on Main Street, disregarding the officer’s direction to pull into the parking lot, according to police. Carbo then pulled sharply to the shoulder of the road, stopped, started forward again, and then suddenly backed into the travel lane. He did this twice, police said, then made a sharp left turn onto South Maple Avenue and a right into the municipal parking lot.

Carbo got out of his vehicle and refused to comply with the officer’s directions to get back into his car. He cursed at the officer and attempted to strike him in the head, according to a report. Carbo continued to fight with the officer and was eventually handcuffed as a second officer arrived.

The officer suffered abrasion injuries to his knees. Carbo complained of ear pain and was treated at Lourdes Hospital in Willingboro.

Carbo was charged with obstruction, resisting arrest and aggravated assault. He was lodged in Burlington County Jail on $22,500 bail.
