School Budget, 'Academy of Excellence' on BOE's Agenda This Month

March was the busiest month of the year so far for the board of education and for the district, with the start of a new program, many events, and the finalization of the annual budget.

One of the most important tasks undertaken by the board was the 2013-2014 budget. During the month, the board presented the budget several times and heard from a handful of residents voicing their opinion and recommendations on it. I would like to thank each resident who came to the board’s budget meetings and those who reached out to the board during the month.

Earlier this week, . Personally speaking, before the next budget cycle I believe increased focus should be put on finding alternative revenue. One such route should be taking an aggressive approach to advertising.

Another key act taken by the board was the acceptance of a grant from the Moorestown Education Foundation to fund a new program called the Academy of Excellence. This is a before- and after-school program taught by school staff to provide additional opportunities outside of the school day to further educational experiences for grades 1-6.  More information can be found on the district website.

At its March 27 meeting, the board also voted unanimously in favor of a resolution stating the board’s opposition to a bill currently in the New Jersey Senate and Assembly. This bill, if signed into law, would prevent school boards from having the option to outsource services in the future. The board’s position does not support or oppose subcontracting, but rather feels the bill undermines the authority of the board to act in the district’s best interest.

Furthermore, during the month there were several very successful events including Home and School’s Family Fun Event with the Harlem Wizards and SpEAC’s annual “Pathways to Success” conference.

In addition, for high school students and their parents/guardians, applications are available for the Local Scholarship Program. Applications are available through the guidance office, and are due no later than April 17.

As a reminder, students will be off school for spring break starting Friday and will return on Monday, April 8.
