Seeing Eye Dog Coming to Library for Presentation

On Saturday, Sept. 10, children in grades K+ are invited to bring their families to the to meet Mystic, an adorable German shepherd puppy who is training to become a Seeing Eye dog.

Children and their parents will learn how Mystic and other dogs like her learn to assist people with visual impairments.

Mystic is affiliated with The Seeing Eye, Inc. of Morristown, the oldest guide dog school in the world.  The Seeing Eye breeds and trains dogs to become Seeing Eye dogs and teaches people who are blind or visually impaired to work with their guide dogs.

Mystic was born to have a special role in the life of a person with a visual impairment. When she was about 8 weeks old, Mystic came to Moorestown to live with a volunteer puppy-raiser who is a member of the Burlington County Seeing Eye Group.

While Mystic is young, the puppy-raiser’s job is to teach her basic obedience and socialization and to provide lots and lots of love. When Mystic is about 18 months old, she will return to The Seeing Eye and train for four months to become a guide dog. When her training is complete, Mystic will be paired with a blind person, and they will train together for about a month.  After that, Mystic will be an official Seeing Eye dog, helping her human companion to lead a more independent life.
