It’s that time of year again! The school year is drawing to a close, and tons of preschool and elementary children are starting to pour into the Moorestown Library for an end-of-year visit. These lucky youngsters will enjoy library tours, story times, crafts and previews of summer programming. For many children, this is also the time when they get their very first library card. Something really BIG is happening at the Moorestown Library next week, and we’re calling all kids ages 2-6 to join in the fun. Clifford the Big Red Dog will be making two appearances at the library, and we’re planning HUGE celebrations in his honor. At 4:15 p.m. on Tuesday, May 14, and again at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 18, Clifford himself will dropping by for a special story time with Clifford books, a short movie, a Clifford craft, and yummy treats for everyone. If you’ve got kids from preschool through high school, be sure to mark your calendar for this Monday, April 15. That’s program sign-up day at the Moorestown Library, and we’ve got fun things in store this spring for kids of all ages. In May, the always-popular Mad Science will return to the library with three special programs for preschool and elementary school students. Running out of shelf space? Looking to get rid of some books? The Moorestown Library is currently accepting donations. We are accepting books of all ages, conditions and subjects, but we are specifically asking for gardening, farming and cookbooks. The library will hold a book sale at the Burlington County Farmers’ Market on Saturday, May 18—opening day—featuring books on these topics. Be sure to stop by and visit us! National Library Week is fast approaching (April 14-20), and Moorestown Library is gearing up to celebrate with this year’s theme: "Communities Matter @ Your Library." It’s no secret many students, parents and teachers find standardized tests to be one of the most stressful aspects of the educational process. In an effort to alleviate some of the stress and confusion surrounding the NJ ASK test, Lumos Learning is presenting a free webinar for parents and educators, and they’ve asked libraries across New Jersey to help spread the word. The results are in for Moorestown Library’s Winter Program, and now it’s time to start claiming prizes.Throughout the month of February, children and teens read books and reported on them to the children’s librarians. For each book they read, the kids got a raffle ticket for a chance to win their choice of one of four grand prizes. Fifty-one children and teens participated in the program, and in just one month, they read a whopping 285 books. If you’re the parent of a sixth-grader at the Upper Elementary School, you have undoubtedly heard of Lexile measures for reading. In fact, you may feel your universe suddenly revolves around Lexile measures, with every waking hour spent trying to find books in your child’s Lexile range.For those not in the know, a Lexile measure is a “piece of information about either an individual's reading ability or the difficulty of a text,” according to Lexile.com. Winter reading is back at the Moorestown Library.For the third year in a row, the Moorestown Library will hold its popular Winter Reading Program for children and teens beginning Friday, Feb. 1. All month long, children and teens can read books, tell a children’s librarian about them, and get a raffle ticket for each book they read. If the back of your closet is overflowing with piles of shoes you’ve haven’t worn in years, or if your children continually outgrow their shoes before they wear them out, the Moorestown Library has the perfect solution for cleaning out your closet and doing a good deed all at the same time. The library is hosting a shoe drive to collect new and gently used shoes in all styles and sizes for men, women and children in need. If winter weather puts you in the mood to warm up with a classic movie, now’s the time to join in on a longstanding Moorestown Library tradition—Jack Favorite’s Film Festival. Throughout the year, local stage actor and classic film connoisseur Jack Favorite selects his favorite films and shows them on the big screen in the library meeting room.
