Find a New Pet at Animal Welfare Association's 'Mega Adoption' Event

The goal of the two-day event in Moorestown is to find good homes for at least 250 pets.

Camden County submitted the following news release:

Camden County is lending its support and participation to the Animal Welfare Association's hosting of a Mega Pet Adoption event on Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 6 and Oct. 7 in the parking lot of PetSmart, 1331 Nixon Drive, Moorestown. Hours are from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Oct. 6th and from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Oct. 7.

Mike Quick of the Philadelphia Eagles and Ian Laperriere of the Philadelphia Flyers will be appearing at the event on Saturday from noon to 2 p.m. to sign autographs and take photos with area animal lovers.

Seventeen animal welfare rescues and shelters, including Camden County’s Animal Shelter, are joining together under a giant tent to adopt out 250 dogs and cats in two days.  There will be prizes, entertainment, kids’ sections and giveaways.

“This is the first adoption event of this scale to happen in our area,” said Nicole Dubois, adoption manager for Voorhees-based AWA. “Hundreds of dogs and cats of all ages and breeds will be at the event looking for their ‘fur-ever’ homes.”

Mega Adoption events are gaining popularity across the county as a way to save many homeless animals from euthanasia. “We used to worry that someone adopting a pet from an event like this was making a poor decision. However, we are learning that the pets adopted from events aren’t returned more often—they stay in the homes and are loved,” said Maya Richmond, executive director of the Animal Welfare Association.

“The Camden County Board of Freeholders applauds this effort to help animals find loving homes and to help alleviate crowding in area shelters,” said Freeholder Carmen Rodriguez, liaison to the County’s Health and Human Services Department, which oversees the CCAS. “The county’s Shared Services Division is working closely with our animal shelter and other shelters in the County to put together a system of animal care and protection that works for all animals and residents. This coming weekend’s event is a creative idea to help with the problem.”

The AWA estimates that between 300 and 400 pets will be available for adoption.

“If we can save 250 pets this weekend, that is 250 success stories,” said Lisa Ross, Executive Director of Camden County Animal Shelter, which is a participant in the event. “Two hundred fifty adopted pets equals one full month of adoptions at the AWA’s adoption center in Voorhees or CCAS’s shelter in Blackwood. These adoptions will make space for 250 other animals to be sheltered and cared for.”
