Spanish exchange students still need host families for July and August.

This summer, in both July and August, a group of high school students will be arriving from Spain to spend one month in the South Jersey area.  Their goal is to experience American life and improve their English.

However, host families have been hard to come by, and South Jersey Global Friendships is desperately seeking help.

"When the opportunity was posted on the Cherry Hill School District website, five eager families called me right away, and I thought 'This is a great start," said Dan Herman, S.J. Global Friendships Coordinator and an English Teacher in the Cherry Hill School District. "However, the weeks that followed have been filled with inquiries,  mostly from people who are curious and would like more information."

That might be good for the long run, but there may not be a long run says Herman, who managed to place 31 students with families last summer.

He said he needs to find families for July. Of the 12 students left to place for July, three are "individuals" who can be placed anywhere in the tri-state area.

Nine students are part of a group program, which affords them the opportunity to attend English classes in Haddonfield three days per week. The classes will be held at Grace Church.

The students' itinerary also includes full day excursions to New York City, Ocean City, and Great Adventure as well as 1/2 day activities, including a River Sharks game, the Cowtown Rodeo, and a trip to Philadelphia.

Host families are invited, but not required, to attend all of the trips and activities.  Transportation is included and tickets to events are greatly discounted.

Host families come in all shapes and sizes, but a family that hosts must consist of at least two people.  The host provides the students with a bed to sleep in, meals, and some transportation.

The host family receives the satisfaction of giving, helping to shape a young person's life, and serving as an ambassador of America.

The host family also gains insight into the culture and lifestyle of Spain.

For more information about the program to become a host, contact Dan Herman at 856-287-2393 or reach him by e-mail at hermanator3@comcast.net.
