Local History to be Shared During Downtown Walking Tour

The Moorestown Improvement Association's annual walking tour returns Sunday afternoon.

Looking for a lesson in downtown Moorestown history?

Swing by Main Street Sunday afternoon for Moorestown Improvement Association’s (MIA) annual walking tour.

This fall’s tour will cover the section of Main from Mill Street to Union Street, said Kimberly Bunn, a member of the MIA’s board of trustees (and a local architect) who possesses a rich knowledge of the town’s architectural heritage.

Bunn—who guides the tours along with fellow MIA member Lynne Schill—said the tour covers not just the buildings themselves and their architectural background, but also their history and “the people who might have lived there, the connections to other historical events either here or far from Moorestown, connections to points in history.”

Previous tours over the last three years, when MIA relaunched the walking tours after a long hiatus, have covered every other section of Main Street but this one, Bunn said. The association hopes to release a pamphlet next year containing information about downtown buildings so those who may have missed prior tours can take a self-guided walking tour.

Bunn said Sunday's tour will feature more than 65 buildings, with the earliest dating back to 1775.

“Personally, as an architect, I find that I look at buildings a little different than most and I often notice details that some look past,” she added. “However, what I love about Moorestown and these tours is that as I am doing the research in preparation for the tours I learn new things, and I love sharing all of this with others.”

Sunday’s tour begins at 1 p.m. and will last approximately two hours. The tour meets at the corner of Main and High streets.

Tickets are $5 for MIA members. Non-members pay $20, which includes a ticket for the tour and a one-year membership to MIA.
