Park Honors Man Dedicated to Service

Frank Fullerton Memorial Park is the perfect spot for a playground.

Listening to Frank Fullerton’s sister Alice, it is apparent there is no better place to rebuild a much-loved playground than .

“He loved to be around children,” said Alice Fullerton, Frank’s youngest sister. “And he was always willing to help.”

Alice Fullerton will be one of Frank Fullerton’s many relatives that will be at the dedication for the new playground, which will be built from . The dedication will be held between 5 and 6 p.m. May 1, depending on when the last nail is hammered into the playground.

The project is being spearheaded by the Friends of Fullerton Park. The grassroots organization has already raised more than $80,000 toward the rebuilding of the park's playground.

The park was dedicated to Frank Fullerton, a sergeant on the Moorestown Police Department, on Memorial Day 1980. The dedication came less than a year after Fullerton died from injuries sustained after he was shot three times while pursuing suspects in a liquor store robbery. Fullerton, who was 48 at the time of his death, was a 24-year veteran of the police force.

Fullerton grew up on East Third Street, the son of Jane and Thomas Fullerton. He was the third of six children. His older brothers, Dick and Dave, are deceased. His three younger sisters–Alice, Jean and Agnes–are all still living. Alice, the baby of the family, still lives in the family home.

Frank’s grandson Paul, along with several classmates from his school in Mt. Laurel, will be among the 600 volunteers helping to build the new playground.

Alice, who remembers reading about the first playground being built at the park, said her brother would not have wanted all this attention.

“What are you doing that for,” Alice said her brother would have responded. “He was humble. He didn’t like attention.

“He was a very, very good man. You can take that from his baby sister.”
