Tribute to NFL Great Dave Robinson in Works

A local group of supporters aim to raise enough money to commission the creation of a bronze bust of Pro Football Hall of Famer Dave Robinson at Moorestown High School.

Moorestown sports legend and NFL great Dave Robinson has already been enshrined in the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Now a group of local supporters want to give him similar honors right here in his old stomping grounds.

Family friend Greg Gray, of Moorestown, said as soon as Robinson was named to the Hall of Fame, Gray and a small group of fellow Robinson fans and friends started discussing the idea of paying some sort of permanent tribute to the former Packer/World Championship winner/Lombardi protege right here in Moorestown.

"It was very, very exciting," Gray said. "We're football fans, but we're big, big Dave Robinson fans."

The ad hoc group has since raised nearly $1,700 toward the creation of a bronze bust of Robinson's likeness, just five days after opening a fundraising page to pull in donations.

Gray said the group has already selected a Haddonfield artist to create the bust, which is estimated to cost around $10,000. The group is trying to raise $12,500, with the excess going toward the creation of a permanent Moorestown sports legends display at the high school.

Moorestown Historical Society trustee Lenny Wagner said he and district athletic director Neil Rosa have been collaborating on the legends display—inspired by a similar exhibit at the Smith-Cadbury Mansion a few years ago—seeking sponsorships from local businesses and have received a few contributions.

"So we're a little closer," Wagner said. "The Dave Robinson (bust) will really sort of help our cause. It calls attention to the fact we do have people in the town like this ... It's pretty remarkable."

Gray said there has been a "groundswell" of support for the Robinson bust, which should hopefully propel the group to its goal of raising the necessary funds in time for the Moorestown High School football home opener on Sept. 12—which Robinson is expected to attend.
