Wings Score Big

Local bars gear up for Super Bowl Sunday.

So, our Birds didn’t make it to the Super Bowl. But, true football fans—or even those who aren’t interested—might find themselves celebrating the two teams that did.

And speaking of birds … what goes better with a cold, icy brew than those movable organs from the domestic fowl served Buffalo? The real question is, hot or honey?

“On Super Bowl, we sell thousands and thousands and thousands of wings,” said Tim Hopkins, kitchen manager at PJ Whelihan’s, a restaurant and bar in Maple Shade. “On Sunday, people will start picking up wings about 1:30. And, it doesn’t stop all night.”

Super Bowl Sunday ranks as one of the most profitable sales days of the year in the highly competitive wings business.

Trays of sizzling wings soaked in upward of seven different sauces will fly out of PJ Whelihan’s and make their way to home-based parties.

Advertising on Super Bowl Sunday remains crucial for corporations. So, the bar will be “offering giveaways such as grills and coolers” sponsored by beer companies.

Hopkins isn’t anticipating a crowd. If past years are any indication, 80 percent of their Super Bowl business will be take-out.

“We tend to run only about three-fourths full [in the restaurant],” said Hopkins.

In Cinnaminson, Whistlers Inn will be gearing up for their takeout orders. What do most people order?

“Wings,” laughs Joan Lynch, a manager there. “We don’t need any food specials. People just want wings. We have had some orders placed six days ago.”

But, the bar will be offering reduced beer prices: $2 for domestic pints and bottles, and $3.50 for imported pints, for people who opt out of partying at home.

Patrons at Whistlers during the game will also score gifts which include huggies and bottle openers. The idea of getting a free sample puts people in a positive mindset.

It’s all about providing some camaraderie among the customers. Lynch said if the team you are cheering for scores a touchdown, the bartender will throw you a prize.

Meanwhile, at the Jug Handle Inn, the sale of wings is staggering.

“We will sell over 10,000 wings,” says Nichole Stone, co-owner of the bar with her husband. The bar “isn’t hosting any special events,” but business will multiply with “regulars as the day goes on.”

And, does Stone have a favorite sauce?

“Mmm … that’s hard. But, I do like the garlic,” says Stone. “My husband likes the hot honey.”

Above all, have fun … but don’t be foolish. Don’t drink and drive.
