The Sound of Music Opens at Moorestown High School Friday Night

With singing nuns, villainous Nazis, and two sets of feisty young von Trapps, MoorArts is all set for opening night of the non-profit’s 16th summer musical, The Sound of Music, July 11-13, 16, 18 and 19 on the stage of the Moorestown High School Auditorium.

The 36-member cast (ages 9-60) of noted performers from across the region, and a live 24-piece pit orchestra will fill the auditorium with the extraordinary score from Rodgers and Hammerstein’s final collaboration.

Veteran director Al Fuchs is uniquely qualified to lead the cast—from childhood until his 30s, he has had the opportunity to play almost every male role in The Sound of Music (SOM).

Fuchs first stepped on the SOM stage at age 10 as Kurt von Trapp, eventually touring in that role, and is thrilled to direct the show that he knows so well. 

He explains, “This is a show that touches every generation—almost everyone knows the lyrics.  I was inspired by the fact that it is based on a true story—and even had the chance to meet Maria Trapp while vacationing at the Trapp villa.”

In an effort to give more budding performers a chance to shine, Fuchs double cast the youngest members of the cast and is carefully guiding each one for their moments in the spotlight. 

As he has demonstrated, their performances could be just the beginning of a lifelong involvement with the show.

This year, MoorArts is excited to broaden accessibility to guests with special needs during an enhanced version of the SOM performance for the July 19 matinee.
