Moorestown Readies for Start of School

In the latest Education Monthly column from BOE Member Brandon Pugh, find out about upcoming fundraisers, important school dates and new district policies.

It’s hard to believe the 2013-2014 school year will be starting in a little more than a week. I hope everyone had an enjoyable and relaxing summer. August may have been a quieter month for the board of education, but the district is ready for the busy months ahead.

At its August meeting, the board adopted a series of policies on second reading, including advertising on school property, use of privately owned technology, and athletic competition. I am personally happy to see an advertising policy put into effect. The complete policies can be found on the district’s website.

The board accepted an agreement with New Group Consulting Inc. to offer strategic planning services to the district. The process will consist of meetings with key district administrators, board of education members and building staff to identify issues, areas for improvement, and next steps for the district. This is an effort for constant improvement in education quality and overall efficiency in the district.

September brings about a busy month for the districts, with transition day on Sept. 6 for grades K, 4, 7, 9, and new students at Moorestown High School; the first day of school for all students on Sept. 9; and numerous back to school nights. On Sept. 18, Home and School will be having a fundraiser from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. at the Chick-fil-A in Centerton Square, so be sure to stop by. A portion of the sales will go to Home and School.

In the coming months there will be many exciting events. Two events in particular to look out for are the Sean Fischel 5k and 1-mile fun walk on Oct. 13, benefiting children’s extra-curricular activities in Moorestown, and the Moorestown Education Foundation’s 18th Annual Golf Outing on Oct. 7, benefiting program development in the district’s schools. Also, Perkins Center for the Arts will be holding its first annual Wiffle Ball Cup on Sept. 21, open to all ages.

The next regular monthly meeting of the Moorestown Board of Education is at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 17, in the William Allen Middle School Media Center. If you are able to attend, we would love to have you. In the meantime, do not hesitate to reach out to the board as a whole, individually, or myself if you need anything.
