Jersey Mike's Set to Open with Community Fundraiser

The popular sub shop is expanding into Moorestown, with a grand opening Wednesday.

The folks from the Cinnaminson Jersey Mike’s Subs are spreading their sandwich franchise into Moorestown, with a grand opening planned Wednesday in the East Gate Square shopping mall on Nixon Drive.

To mark the occasion, partners Matt Catania and John Helm, both 32, will be holding a five-day celebration after a ribbon-cutting ceremony set to begin at 10 a.m. tomorrow through July 1, offering sandwiches to anyone who pays just $1 and who has one of the more than 10,000 coupons being distributed throughout the community in mailers and on Jersey Mike’s Subs Moorestown Facebook page (and ) with funds being donated to

Initially delayed by one week when the contractor, who was finishing the store's roof, ran into unexpected scheduling conflicts, the North Jersey natives are happy to be finally opening up their store.

“Some things you just can’t foresee when you are opening up a business,” says Catania, who practiced law for five years before entering the sub business.

Catania and Helm have been friends since the two played basketball for Point Pleasant High School. Last September, the business owners joined forces and opened a shop in Cinnaminson—where they have both recently moved into homes—in The Shoppes of Cinnaminson on Route 130 South, the first Jersey Mike’s Subs in South Jersey.

Chief executive officer and founder Peter Cancro started his career while working at Mike’s Subs in Point Pleasant Beach in 1972 when he was 14. At 17, he made a bold move and bought the store when the former owner decided to sell.

Cancro changed the name to Jersey Mike’s Subs after expanding the business. There are now 550 stores across the United States.

Besides subs, the airy and cheerful store will sell wraps, salads and grilled sandwiches, employing 15 to 20 locals.

The partners expect to open two additional stores in Cherry Hill and Marlton within the next six to nine months.

“It was great working with the folks in Moorestsown. I can’t say enough good things about it,” says Catania. “And we are looking forward to being a part of the community.”
