Built in 1826 as a summer retreat for the Samuel Richards family in Atsion NJ, adjacent to Atsion Lake and the small iron forge town he was building at the same time.

The property was sold in 1862, resold in 1871, and sold again in 1892. This final purchase was made by Joseph Wharton along with several thousand acres he was buying in the Pinelands with the idea of supplying fresh water to the City of Philadelphia. The State Legislature squashed the idea very quickly, passing a law that no water within the state's boundaries could be sold outside of the state, and that law remains on the books today.

The town of Atsion is actually no longer in existence, but Atsion Lake remains a popular swimming spot as part of the Wharton State Forest. In 2011 the house underwent a full restoration, bringing it back to the appearance it had when it was new.
