Combat Hunger with Your Mailbox May 14

Help Food Bank of South Jersey by supporting the "Stamp Out Hunger" campaign.

The good folks at Food Bank of South Jersey hope you will make your mailman work a little harder than usual one Saturday next month.

They're pretty sure the mailman won't mind.

Leave a can or two, or three or four, of non-perishable food in your mailbox on May 14 in support of the National Association of Letter Carriers' (NALC) Stamp Out Hunger campaign.

All food donated locally will be turned over to Food Bank of South Jersey for distribution to its network of partner agencies in Camden, Burlington, Gloucester and Salem counties.

“It’s a short walk from your kitchen to your mailbox, but those small steps you take are part of a giant effort to help the needy, and your donation will mean so much to the people we serve,” said Food Bank of South Jersey CEO Val Traore in a statement.

In addition to canned goods, letter carriers will take any shelf-stable items.

This year marks the 19th year of the NALC Stamp Out Hunger campaign. Mailmen nationwide have collected more than a billion pounds of food since the program's inception.

“As letter carriers, we see people on our routes six days a week that must rely on the generosity and assistance of others to help provide something as basic as a meal," NALC President Fredric V. Rolando said. "We’re proud to have established a program that truly provides assistance in every community across the country.”

The food drive, held the second Saturday of May each year, is important now more than ever, according to Traore.

"The economic downturn has hit the poor with special fury," said Traore. "If we’re to reach our goal of distributing 12 million pounds of food this year, we can’t do it without help from the public."
