Community Corner

In "Pursuit" of Camp Funds

Troop 601 plans fundraising game similar to "The Amazing Race" to raise money for summer camp.

If you enjoy the TV show The Amazing Race, Moorestown Boy Scout Troop 601 may have just the competition for you.

The brainchild of Scout Leader Susan Paoletti, “Pursuit” will raise funds to send the scouts to camp this summer. The competition, which will take place on Saturday, April 30, is modeled somewhat after The Amazing Race.

“I was looking for something fun for this age group (14 and up),” Paoletti explained. “We hope to involve the community and raise funds while also enlightening them about scouting.”

The “race” will take place on the cross-country course at the high school. Teams of two will compete against the clock, racing to each of the 10 stations along the 3-mile course. At each station, the team will be asked to perform something, much like in The Amazing Race.

Paoletti is mum on the specifics, but offered that some tasks will be physical, like chin ups; some athletic, like juggling or basketball free throws;  and some will be cerebral, like trivia questions.

At the end, the fastest team will win the grand prize. But there are many more prizes to be awarded throughout the competition.

“”We’ve been getting a lot of donations from local businesses,” Paoletti said. ‘We hope there will be a winning category for almost everyone.”

The troop's website (troop601moorestown.webs.com) is listing all of the businesses that have contributed prizes.

Guest participant Vai Sikahema, a former Phialdelphia Eagle and current sports director at NBC-10, will team with his daughter to compete. Sikahema’s three sons were all members of Troop 601, according to Paoletti, and all reached the Eagle Scout level.

According to Paoletti’s husband, Steve, who also helps with the troop, the boys hope to attend the Goshen Scout Reservation in Goshen, VA, this summer. But, the cost of the camp is $300 per scout, and the boys are hoping to raise this money.

Pursuit teams will pay a $40 registration fee to participate and that money will go directly to funding the scout project.

“We have room for 125 teams of two,” Paoletti said.

Teams who register before April 1 will receive a free Pursuit T-shirt. Go to the scout website to download the registration form or call 856-685-0604 with questions.
