Scott Terry, Red Wanting Blue Get Big Reaction from Letterman Crowd

"For a minute, it felt like it was our show," said Moorestown's Scott Terry of his band's network TV debut.

The huge burst of applause Scott Terry and his band, Red Wanting Blue, got at the end of their Late Show With David Letterman set Wednesday was something of a rarity in the hallowed halls of the Ed Sullivan Theater in Midtown Manhattan.

Terry said Late Show staff members told the band the reaction they got during their performance is usually reserved for big-name acts like U2—not indie rock bands from Columbus, Ohio.

“They said, ‘Typically, nobody cheers that loud,’” said Terry, who grew up in Moorestown and . “The whole staff was floored by that. That was great.”

Terry said when they took the stage—in the same building where the Beatles made their U.S. debut—he looked out and saw a sea of familiar faces, loyal Red Wanting Blue fans from across the country who had come out for the band's network TV debut.

“I couldn’t believe how many people I could see in the crowd that I recognized,” said Terry. “I expected a bunch of people to sit there, clap, like they’re prodded to by the camera … For a minute, it felt like it was our show.

“We've done over 2,000 shows. But nothing like this," he added. "It was surreal."

Among the familiar faces were Terry’s parents, Jack and Vicki Terry. Vicki said though the audience was predominantly made up of fans, “After the show, we met a lot of people who’d never heard of them. I think they made a lot of friends last night, which is great.”

Scott Terry said he and the rest of the band knew their appearance on Letterman was a “definite milestone.”

The past year has been a big one for Red Wanting Blue, perhaps their biggest since forming at Ohio University in Athens, OH, some 15 years ago: a new album (From the Vanishing Point)—their first ever for a label—a new manager, a new booking agent, all these things contributing to a higher profile for the heretofore under-the-radar band.

The band will be kicking off a national headlining tour this fall and recording a new album, their ninth, this winter.
