Ward's Garage Demolished

The Garden Club will propose a pocket park for the site.

The old Ward’s Garage site at the corner of High and Main streets is being prepared for its next stage of development.

Late last year, the township purchased the property and this past week the structure that once housed a garage and service center was demolished.

Township Manager Chris Schultz said that no final plans are in place for what will go on the site.

But the Moorestown Garden Club is preparing to present an idea for a pocket park.

“We were approached by Margo Foster of Save The Environment of Moorestown (STEM). She had the original idea for the pocket park,” explained Gina Zegel of the Garden Club. "We’ve taken Margo’s idea and have been refining it.”

The Garden Club hopes to present its plan to Council this spring, in either April or May. While the exact plan and final drawings are still in the works, Zegel said the Garden Club envisions a park with a labyrinths made out of hardscaping.

“We will use drought-tolerant, native shrubs and flowers, and there will be some benches,” Zegel explained.

In a nod to Moorestown history, a bas-relief is planned for the back wall. The relief will depict a Percheron horse with an explanation of the horse’s history and origin.

Percherons were first imported to the United States in 1839 by Edward Harris of Moorestown.

The Percheron, a sturdy working horse, quickly became a favorite of  the American farmer. Today, Percherons are shown in competition and are used in business advertising and promotion. They are also commonly used with carriages that provide city tours.
