What You Missed From This Week's Council Meeting

The mayor and manager praise township workers for their response to Hurricane Sandy, council awards the fifth liquor license to East Gate for $1 million+, and more.

For those who couldn’t make it to this week’s township council meeting, there were a few interesting items that didn’t make it into a full story, but were nonetheless noteworthy. Here are a few leftover tidbits from the meeting:

- Mayor John Button and township manager Scott Carew showered praised on the emergency responders, public works employees and township officials who worked tirelessly throughout Hurricane Sandy.

"They really have not only put in dozens and dozens of hours in a row, they've done so in many cases by putting themselves in harm's way," said Carew, who was particularly complimentary regarding Moorestown Police Sgt. Lee Lieber, the township's emergency management coordinator, and public works director Ken Ewers.

"I don't think they stopped working from Sunday night to Tuesday afternoon," Carew said.

In spite of their best efforts, along with PSE&G, he said it would likely take weeks before the township is completely back to normal. (According to PSE&G'S outage map, there are between 1-500 customers still without power in Moorestown as of Saturday night.)

Button said the school district would provide parking and security on Election Day Tuesday, since school will be in session. (Nov. 6 had previously been scheduled as an in-service day for teachers, but will now be a regular school day to make up for the days lost last week.)

- Council unanimously approved the awarding of a fifth liquor license to East Gate Square. East Gate will pay $1,030,000 for the license.

East Gate’s proposal identified the Friendly’s restaurant on Nixon Drive as the possible future site of an “American-style bistro.” Attempts to reach the owners of East Gate Square for comment were unsuccessful.

Township attorney Thomas Coleman said the application will now be sent to Sgt. Lieber so law enforcement can take care of the proper vetting in order for the township to officially award the license to East Gate.

- Carew said Land Tek will begin construction at Wesley Bishop North on Monday, and will have a 150-day window—weather-permitting—to complete the project.

"There should be no problem with them having it ready for the spring season," he said.

Council will hold its next regular meeting at 7:30 p.m. Monday, Nov. 19, in the IT room at Moorestown High School.
