To the editor:

As the holidays fast approach, most of us are looking through a very narrow lens, just trying to make it to New Year’s Eve having made all of our commitments. However, we at the Department of Parks and Recreation are just getting started on a brand new year of activities and events for residents of all ages.

First and foremost, mark your calendars for the second annual Basketball Kick-Off on Jan. 4 and 5. Teams and leagues will come together at the newly renovated Church Street Recreation Center to help start the season. This year, just as they did last year, participants will be given the opportunity to pick up and/or drop off gently used sports equipment in the Parks and Recreation Sports Swap. Additionally, participants are asked to bring nonperishable items to help stock the shelves at the Live Civilly/Moorestown Ministerium Food Pantry.

The ongoing partnership between Live Civilly and Parks and Recreation has been a three-year relationship that has helped engage young people in both academic and athletic activities. The Basketball League will offer Civility Awards again this year, courtesy of Live Civilly. The Civility Awards are presented to youth athletes who exhibit the characteristics of sportsmanship and teamwork. While many leagues offer awards for outstanding plays or excelling on the fields/courts, the Department of Parks and Recreation also rewards athletes who demonstrate  the positive characteristics so important in youth sports today. Coaches are encouraged each week to submit the names of players who deserve recognition for not only playing well but playing with civility.

Save the dates:

  • Jan. 4 and 5 — Second annual Basketball Kick-Off (specific times for individual teams will be announced), Church Street Recreation Center

  • Live Civilly Food Drive - Please bring a nonperishable food item and receive Jersey Mike's coupons.

  • Sports Swap - Bring something or take something.
