Welcome to the Neighborhood

What does it mean to be a neighbor?  State Farm's company slogan is, " Like a good neighbor, State Farm is there." I have also heard, " Good fences make good neighbors."  Which one is true? How can a neighbor be helpful, provide security, and protection while also being isolated with clear set boundaries?  Maybe both are true.

What does the word neighbor mean?  The word is made up of two words, "near" and "one".  Wow,  neighbor is anyone who is near you.  Now this takes on a whole new meaning.  At different times of our day we are near many different people  In actuality, we all neighbors.  We are always near somebody.

If we begin to look at the world as one big neighborhood, how would our world be different?  Would we stand idly bye  while injustice takes place? Would we turn a deaf ear to a person in need?  Would we lend a hand to those who are suffering from a long-term mental or physical illness?  Probably not.  What would our world look like if everyone smiled instead of frowning at people?  What if we just said, "Hi, Neighbor" to everyone we meet.  I guarantee our world would be a better place.

Most of have the mindset, "as long as it doesn't happen to me" or "at least it's not happening in my back yard ", that we are ok.  We are not.  With the advancement of technology, we are now one big Global Community.  Because of the internet, Everyone Is My Neighbor.

Last night I was honored by the NJ NAACP for Outstanding Community Leadership. My wife and I had a great time meeting other pastors and leaders who are making a different in our community.  List night only solidified my resolve to realize that Everyone Is My Neighbor.

This blog will highlight my neighbors who are making a difference in our community.  Look forward to being a part of making our world a much smaller and safer place.
