Letter to the Editor: No Lack of Transparency in Solar Project Process

Mayor Chris Chiacchio responds to accusations of a lack of transparency in the proposed solar project process.

The following letter was submitted by Moorestown Mayor Chris Chiacchio in response to Thursday's letter submitted by the Moorestown Democrats concerning the proposed solar project:

I write in response to the charge that the proposed solar project lacks transparency.

Well over the past year, Sustainable Moorestown has studied the benefits of a solar project. By way of background, Sustainable Moorestown is a non-partisan committee made up of residents from all walks of life.

This dedicated group of residents has spent countless hours of their own time helping make this great Town more environmentally friendly and sustainable.

I note that the meetings are public and can be attended by anyone. On July 7, 2014, Sustainable Moorestown presented their recommendations in favor of a solar project to the Council, residents and various members of the media.

Based on Sustainable Moorestown’s recommendation, the Council moved forward with appointing a consultant to help guide the Township through the process.

I note that the concept of a solar project in Town is not a new idea. A study was undertaken years ago at the behest of the former township manager and a prior Council made up of Republicans and Democrats.

I believe this is the study the Democratic Council candidates broadly referred to in their editorial although they make it appear that the study was just commissioned.

Again, this study was undertaken years ago and a report was given to Council at the meeting of August 22, 2011, almost three years ago. The Minutes of the Meeting are located at:

Regarding the appointment of Maser Engineering to act as a consultant for the solar project, Maser has knowledge and experience with the development of solar arrays.

I supported the appointment as I believe their experience will be a benefit to our Town.

Lastly, regarding the allegation that we have tried for years to obtain title to the proposed site on New Albany Road, that simply is not accurate. We will move forward with obtaining title to property as soon as practicable and foresee no issues with obtaining clear title.

The proposed solar project is great venture for our Town. The persons willing to speak half-truths and politicize this project need to take a break, and ask themselves at what length are they willing to go to get elected?
