Memorial Day Celebrations In The Area

Memorial Day traditionally signifies the beginning of summer.  It is a day for picnics, barbeques and family gatherings.  

Here are some of the events taking place in our area to celebrate Memorial Day:

•    Moorestown – Moorestown’s Memorial Day Ceremonies are set for Monday, May 26, 10 am at Memorial Field on South Church Street. The ceremonies will being with music from the Moorestown High School Band. Boy Scout Troop #44 will post the colors and the Cub Scout Troop #44 will lead the Pledge of Allegiance. Pastor Steve Donat of the First United Methodist Church will provide the invocation and the Second Baptist Church Choir will provide a musical interlude.  A Moorestown official will introduce the ceremonies and Judith Young will present “Send Them Home Tenderly”. Young and the Moorestown Community Girl Scouts will do the Roll Call and Remembrance. Lenny Wagner of the Moorestown Historical Society will be the main speaker. William H. Snyder American Legion Post 42 will conduct the Military Salute and the Moorestown High School Bank will play Taps. Following the Benediction by Pastor Donat, Carla McIlmail will perform a musical conclusion. The ceremonies will be followed by an open house at the Moorestown Historical Society at 12 High Street from 11:30 am to 2 pm. The open house will feature special military and family memorabilia of local families who served in the Civil War and other wars. This year marks the 150th anniversary of the United States Civil War, in which many local residents fought.

•    Mt. Laurel – Mount Laurel Township is hosting a Memorial Day Tribute at Laurel Acres Park on Friday, May 30th at 6:00 pm.  Please join officials, veteran organizations, and other civic organizations to honor those who have served our country.

•    Marlton – Marlton VFW will be hosting their Patriotic Pig Roast and Best Chili and Dessert Contest on Saturday, May 24th from 1 pm to 7 pm. Donation: $20.00 and includes: All-You-Can Eat BBQ, burgers, hotdogs, chicken, soda, beverages and desserts.  There will be a DJ, sing off, games, face painting, military honors, moon bounce, horseshoe tournament. Be sure to bring your chili and dessert to enter the contest.  Children16 and under are free with paying parent.  WWII and Korean veterans get free admission.  For more information go to www.marltonvfw.com.

•    Cherry Hill – Cherry Hill Township will hold their annual Memorial Day tribute at 11 am on Monday, May 26th on the grounds of the Township Municipal Complex. Please join members of American Legion Post 372, Jewish War Veterans Post 126 and men and women from around the community who will gather to honor hometown heroes and the more than 1.3 million others who have made the ultimate sacrifice in defense of the United States throughout our history. A BBQ lunch will follow the service.
