Funeral Services Set for Moorestown Police Officer

Moorestown Police Ptlm. Craig Berner was killed in an off-duty motorcycle accident Saturday night.

Funeral services for deceased Moorestown Police Ptlm. Craig Berner will be held Saturday at the First United Methodist Church in Moorestown.

Berner, 52, a 1979 graduate of Moorestown High School, was killed in an off-duty motorcycle accident on Westfield Road last weekend.

After high school, Berner served with the U.S. Marines for three years, then worked as a police officer in Guam from 1983-1985. He returned to Moorestown after leaving the service and joined the Moorestown Police Department in 1987, where he served as a patrolman for 26 years.

Lt. Lee Lieber described Berner as a dedicated, "humorous guy," whose distinctive laugh could often be heard in the halls of the police station.

“You have to remember Craig in that light. That’s what helps us deal with this,” said Lieber.

Berner was married to Carrie (nee Clark) and had three children: Scott Berner, of Kentucky; and Travis and Phoebe Berner, of Moorestown. He was also the brother of Garth R. Berner, Bruce A. Berner, Linda Kandle and David S. Berner.

A memorial service for Berner will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at First United Methodist (446 Camden Ave., Moorestown). Friends may call between 5:30-8 Friday night at the church.

In lieu of flowers or any other expression of sympathy, the family asks that donations be made to the Craig W. Berner Memorial Fund to benefit Travis and Phoebe Berner, ℅ Liberty Bank, 227 W. Camden Ave., Moorestown, NJ 08057, or at any local Liberty Bell branch.
