Obituary: Robert W. Deaton

Robert W. Deaton, age 88, died peacefully on May 8, 2014.

Bob served in the US Navy during World War II as a radio operator on a PT boat in the South Pacific.

A graduate of St. Aloysius Academy, West Chester, PA, Camden Catholic High School and Rutgers University, he was Comptroller of Kenney’s Restaurants in the late 1950s and early 1960s, then was hired by Eugene Morey, owner of the Garden State Park, Hialeah Park, and the Cherry Hill Inn to be General Manager of the new Cherry Hill Lodge.

Bob became Director of Finance for the Diocese of Camden in 1964, and was one of the founders of NJANPHA, The New Jersey Association of Non-Profit Homes for the Aging, which is now called Leading Age of NJ.

Bob spent the balance of his career as Director of Long Term Care at the Diocese and retired in 1997 after 33 years of service. He was an avid golfer and an ardent Notre Dame fan and will be remembered as a quiet man who was respected and loved by all who met him.

Husband of 66 years of Dorothy (nee Fitzgerald). Father of Robert Deaton, Jr., Dorothy Deaton-Young & her loving husband Stuard Young of Havertown, PA. Grandfather of Claire Young. Brother of Elizabeth Bogucki of Elsmere, DE. Also survived by his loyal nephew Edmund Makel & his dear wife Charlotte, of West Deptford, NJ, and loving niece Patricia Fitzgerald of Haddonfield, NJ.

Mass of Christian burial Tues 10:30 am at Our Lady of Good Counsel Church, 42 W. Main St. Moorestown, NJ. Viewing Monday Eve 6- 8 pm at the Lewis Funeral Home, 78 E. Main St. Moorestown, NJ. Entombment Calvary Cemetery, Cherry Hill, NJ.
