Ruth Canton Passes Away at 90

Ruth Canton, (nee Dumbleton) passed away on Oct. 23 at the age of 90.

Ruth, the daughter of Dr. Frank and Lydia Dumbleton, grew up in Haddonfield, where she was active in dramatic arts and public speaking. After graduating from what now is The College of New Jersey—where she met her husband, Paul A. Canton—she returned to Haddonfield to teach English and direct the Drama Club and senior plays.  

Ruth and her husband later moved to Moorestown, where they raised their five children.

During her younger years, Ruth was a member of the Curtis Auxiliary, the First United Methodist Church and the Parent-Teacher Association, as well as CONTACT of Burlington County. She was also an enthusiastic bridge player.

Ruth is survived by her husband of 68 years, Paul, and cherished by her children Paul Jr., Bruce, Lee, Lynn and John, as well as her nine grandchildren and five great grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 2, at the First Presbyterian Church, 101 Bridgeboro Road. Moorestown. Interment will be private.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions be made to a charity of the donor’s choice in Ruth’s name.
