Authorities: Mt. Laurel Man Wrote Bogus Check for Moorestown Home

A Mount Laurel man who tried to purchase a Moorestown home with a nearly half-million dollar check written off an empty bank account has been indicted, according to authorities.

Brett A. Cooper, 35, of 1609 Larchmont Place, Mount Laurel, had come to an agreement on a purchase price for a home in Moorestown. At the closing, he produced a check for $484,000 and represented it to be from his bank, according to the Burlington County Prosecutor’s Office.

The check was revealed to be fraudulent however when the title insurance company was notified by Cooper’s bank that his account contained insufficient funds to cover the check. In fact, the account was empty when he presented the check, authorities said.

Cooper was indicted on one count of theft by deception (second degree), one count of elements of computer theft (second degree), two counts of forgery (third degree) and one count of uttering a forged instrument (third degree).  

An arraignment will be scheduled soon in Superior Court.

The investigation was conducted by detectives from the and the Burlington County Prosecutor’s Office Financial Crimes Unit.
