Moorestown Man Charged with Perjury in PA District Court

Dennis Burleigh was arrested after police say he lied to a district judge, according to the Springfield Sun.

A Moorestown man was charged with perjury last month after lying to a Pennsylvania district judge during a hearing.

Dennis Burleigh, 57, was charged with harassment in April for putting up fraudulent posters in Springfield Township, PA, accusing his then brother-in-law—who had testified against Burleigh in a civil trial in New Jersey—of being a sex offender, as reported in the Springfield Sun.

Burleigh appeared before District Judge Elaine Berkoff on Sept. 22 on the harassment charge and claimed he had never received notice of the charge. He told the judge he couldn’t have put up the posters because he hadn’t driven since December 2009, telling Berkoff it took him four hours to get to the court that day because he had to take multiple trains, police said. He was found guilty on the harassment charge.

Suspicious of Burleigh’s claims, police followed him to the nearby SEPTA regional rail station after the hearing. Police then drove to the next station down the line, North Hills, and watched Burleigh get off the train and get into his vehicle, which was parked nearby. Police said a copy of the harassment charge was laying on the back seat.

Burleigh was pulled over and arrested and arraigned on felony charges before District Judge John Murray. He was taken to Montgomery County Correctional Facility in lieu of $35,000 cash bail.

He was charged with perjury, false swearing and driving with a suspended license.

A clerk at the Springfield Township Police Department said Burleigh has since been released following a preliminary hearing, but had no further information.

Burleigh’s home phone number is unlisted and the number for his business, Burleigh’s Paint and Paper on Main Street in Moorestown, is out-of-service.
