Moorestown Police to Participate in Drug Takeback Initiative

The Moorestown Police Department will participate in the 2014 Drug Enforcement Administration's (DEA) Operation Take Back NJ initiative on April 26.

Moorestown Police will host a Prescription and Over the Counter Medicine Disposal Site from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. in the front parking lot of the Police Department, 1245 N. Church St., Suite 2.

Residents may dispose of medication either in its original container or by removing medication from its container and disposing directly into the drug disposal box.

If the original container is submitted, residents are encouraged to remove the prescription label if it contains any personal identifying information.

Liquid products, such as cough medicine, should remain sealed in their original container. The depositor should ensure that the cap is tightly sealed to prevent leakage.

Syringes and other sharp instruments will not be accepted.

The mission of the DEA New Jersey Division Operation Take Back NJ is to provide a safe and legal method for the citizens of the state to dispose their unwanted, unused, and expired medicines.

Each year, a growing number of teenagers quietly turn to their parents' medicine cabinets to score drugs, experts say.

According to one of the most recent studies, Monitoring the Future, conducted by the University of Michigan between 1997 and 2007, treatment admissions for prescription painkillers increased more than 400 percent. '

Additionally, the number of visits to hospital emergency department involving the non-medical use of narcotic painkillers increased 111 percent between 2004 and 2008.
