Moorestown Remembers Walter Maahs

The Lenola Fire District pays tribute its longtime member.

Services for Walter T. Maahs were held Tuesday in Moorestown.

Maahs, a Moorestown resident and former mayor, died April 20. He was 84.

Maahs was a veteran of the U.S. Navy and served in World War II.

He was the retired owner and operater of Safecare Ambulance Service of Moorestown. He was a 63-year life member of Lenola Fire Company, Station 313; founding and life member of Lenola Emergency Unit, Station 318, serving as captain from 1960 to 1970; Lenola Fire Company Board of Fire Commissioners from 1961 to 1979; serving as president from 1961 to 1979; Moorestown town council from 1977 to 1996; mayor of Moorestown from 1988 to 1996; Citizen of the Year 1998; member Moorestown Rotary Club from 1986 to 1997; and member of Knights of Columbus, Our Lady of Good Counsel Church.

Maahs is survived by his wife Carolyn S. (Sabotta) Maahs; his children Michael Maahs (Mary Ellen), Karen McDermott (Vincent), Cindi Maahs-Knobbs (Steve) and Linda Klatt (Harry). He is also survived by 14 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren.

Services were held at McChesney Funeral Home. Burial was private.
