Police: Serial Burglars Stole More Than $2 Million

The arrest of two Medford men, accused of stealing more than $2 million worth of goods in a series of “high-end” burglaries across South Jersey, has cleared eight unsolved cases from the Moorestown Police Department, route: {:controller=>"listings", :action=>"show", :id=>"moorestown-township-police"} -->’s books.

Police arrested Darius Gittens, 52, and Geoffrey Petit, 47, on Friday after a months-long investigation into 27 residential burglaries spanning several of the ritzier communities in Burlington and Camden counties, according to a release from Medford Police.

Police from Moorestown, Medford, Mount Laurel, Evesham, Voorhees and Haddonfield and the Camden County Prosecutor’s Office pooled their resources and formed a task force to investigate the crimes, eventually leading them to Gittens and Petit, the release stated.

On Sept. 5, police in Moorestown, Medford, Evesham and Voorhees took both suspects into custody based on charges issued out of Moorestown. Meanwhile, search warrants were executed on their homes and vehicles, police said, and over the course of the past week, detectives have continued to investigate and have recovered more than 400 items believed to have been stolen during the burglaries.

Victims of the burglaries reported more than $2 million worth of cash, jewelry, antiques, electronics, coins and other items had been stolen.

Police again arrested Gittens and Petit on Sept. 14, at which point they were charged in connection with the remaining burglaries. They were each charged with multiple counts of burglary, theft, criminal mischief, interception of emergency communication for an unlawful purpose, and possession of a radio to intercept emergency communications while committing a crime. In addition, Petit was charged with impersonating a public servant, receiving stolen property, possession of a stun gun, and one count of certain person not to have weapons. Gittens was also charged with possession of a stun gun, possession of handcuffs, unlawful possession of a handgun, and two counts of certain persons not to have weapons.
