Positive West Nile Virus Test in Moorestown

Mosquitoes in traps near Moorestown’s sewerage plant tested positive for West Nile virus, Burlington County officials announced Tuesday.

Burlington County Mosquito Division will spray the area starting at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, July 5. A half-mile radius around the plant will be treated.

The Moorestown sewerage plant, located at 250 Pine St., has mosquito traps to monitor any West Nile virus, eastern equine encephalitis and St. Louis encephalitis cases.

A positive test also turned up recently in Mt. Holly. In late May, another positive test turned up in Pemberton Township.

West Nile virus can cause various symptoms, including abdominal pain, fever, headache, sore throat and vomiting, according to the U.S. National Library of Medicine.

Residents can cut down on mosquito bites by using repellent, wearing long sleeves and long pants, and limiting outdoor activity when mosquitoes are most active, during dawn and dusk, the county says.

Cleaning up areas that collect standing or rain water—clogged gutters, flowerpots, old car tires—can also cut down on breeding grounds for mosquitoes. Be sure to change birdbath water at least once a week.
