Want to Make Your Kids Safer on the Road?

The Burlington County Sheriff's Department has a program for you—and your kids—this weekend.

Anxious because your teenage son or daughter is about to get their driver’s license? The Burlington County Sheriff’s Department can help.

Sheriff Jean E. Stanfield will hold a free presentation this weekend designed to reduce teen driver crashes by increasing parental involvement. The program, called "Share the Keys," will be held from 12:30-2 p.m. Saturday, at the Emergency Services Training Center, 53 Academy Drive, Westampton.

"Share the Keys" is structured for parents and teen drivers in the pre-permit/permit stage of licensure. It is designed to support parental involvement and safe driving behaviors.

“I am very impressed with the research that went into making this program effective,” said Stanfield. “My granddaughter just received her driving permit and I am so pleased we can offer this class to her and the other teens taking to the road.”

The program further assists parents in understanding the Graduated Driver Licensing (GDL) laws and responsibilities associated with driving that are essential to teen driver safety. Parents, and teens who already hold a probationary license, will also benefit from this program.

Key objectives for the program include: Understanding the GDL, Being a Good Role Model, Effectively Enforcing the GDL at Home, Increasing Practice Driving Hours, and Controlling the Keys.

Door prizes from local businesses will be given away during the presentation, including Smoothie King, LA Fitness, Westampton Car Wash, Camden RiverSharks, Camden Aquarium and Friendly's.

Parents and teens interested in attending the "Share the Keys" presentation can call the Burlington County Sheriff's Department, Community Services Unit, 609-265-3788.
