Five Things You Need to Know This Week

A vote on liquor referendums, an update on the municipal complex and a solar project presentation are the highlights of an eventful council meeting tonight.

1. The standout item from what looks to be a lively meeting tonight is likely to be the council’s votes on two resolutions directing the county clerk to place questions on the November ballot about serving liquor in Moorestown, and specifically the Moorestown Mall. Township Clerk Patricia Hunt last week intended to get the liquor referendum before voters. Mayor John Button said, because the petitions were certified, the council is “compelled” to approve the resolutions.

2. Council will provide another update on the . Following this latest presentation, Button said council’s hope is it will “have enough information to move forward with the library-administration side of the complex.” Demolition of the existing town hall building should begin in early October, the mayor said. (UPDATE: This has been removed from the agenda for tonight's meeting.)

3. Council will also hear a presentation concerning the installation of solar panels near the wastewater treatment plant on Pine Street. Button said the township owns a good deal of land in that area and is assessing the viability of putting panels there.

4. The council is slated to approve the creation of a special law enforcement officer position. Township manager Tom Merchel recommended the hiring of four officers at a rate of $20/hour at 20 hours per week to assist with various duties including foot patrols on Main Street, traffic control during events, emptying parking meters and administrative tasks. The township has not yet hired anyone to fill those positions.

5. Rob Scott (the guy writing this) now has one week under his belt. That’s one week of trying to figure out just what the heck he’s doing. So far so good … right?
