UPDATE: Massive Brush Fire Rages In Berkeley,…

PREIT Seeks Left Turn Into Mall from Route 38

The Moorestown Mall owner is expected to make a presentation at tonight's meeting, among other business.

Township council meets at 7:30 p.m. tonight in the IT room at Moorestown High School. Among the highlights of the meeting is a presentation from Moorestown Mall owner PREIT.

Township manager Scott Carew said PREIT would like to install a left turn lane into the mall from Route 38 West. PREIT needs approval from the state Department of Transportation, he explained, and is seeking council's endorsement to aid in receiving the approval.

Carew said he did not know where PREIT wanted to add the left turn. A call to PREIT Friday afternoon was not immediately returned.

Council will also discuss filling the township's vacant information technology position, as well as issue proclamations for Kindness Week and Art Month.

Town Council should vote no on left turn lane. It appears a left turn lane would slow things down. This is the first time they have brought this up, why now? The mall knew what they had as for access there is since they bought the mall. A little late at the 11th hour.

There is a left hand turn lane (a long one) that takes drivers into East Gate with a cut through into the mall. I agree with Mail Fan that it is a little late - 11th hour - they knew this before, why now? But that aside, a left turn lane into the mall may help reduce the ridiculous congestion that occurs at 38 & Lenola Road and may help cut down on some of the accidents there as well??

A left turn along the median in front of Pep Boys would be a good idea if the run up is long enough but that may require a light on 38 east which may not help traffic at all but it would help segregate the traffic going to East Gate versus the mall traffic which may be a good thing. I would support this pending their proposed design which I assume will be completely nonsensical.

Years ago there was a jughandle left turn into the mall. Whatever happened to that and can't they just re-install it?

I agree that a left hand turn from 38 West this would help to improve traffic flow at 38 & Lenola Road as stated above. Also it would make it easier to get to the mall from that direction which would help increase revenue for our township. Many times I have avoided going to the mall because of the convoluted traffic entry. If it increases tax revenues for Moorestown, isn't that a good thing? We should support businesses that contribute to our township.

YES!!!!!

Nice response, Alison. Not sure why this would be considered "11th hour". It seems that this is an improvement that will benefit the traveling public, as well as those patronizing the mall. Traffic engineering is a complex discipline, and I'm sure that NJDOT will not permit this to happen unless warrants are proven and safety will be enhanced. If so, I'm all for it!

With a traffic light needed it will only add to the traffic congestion there. I'm sure an alternative use can be found such as some of the suggestions above reopening the Nixon drive jug handle, rather than new contruction.

The Nixon drive jughandle is a good idea, but I would expect that it would render the left turn into Ease Gate near useless. I don't get the logic that more mall business increases tax revenue though....how does that work?

Rather than a new turn off 38, A suggestion may be that the mall have the traffic from the east gate side go straight once you cross over Nixon drive near boscovs. Right now you must make a left or right turn. Improve that entrance to the mall property.

If you are a Moorestown resident, it boggles my mind why you would NOT want this turn lane. Medians are known to kill business. This will dramatically help this mall, which we all know needs as much help as possible.

The Nixon drive jughandle used to back up around the holidays with cars lined up on the shoulder. That was before anything was behind the mall. A left turn into Sears with a long run up can only help the mall...and when timed right won't much impact anything on 38. When half of the stores are empty or junk, Preit claims the value is less in their tax appeal and the ratables in town go down. That hurts everyone....so good stores and traffic are good.

Look, didn't someone say about our stretch of rt 38 still "has a rural feel" and the medians are good for the town. So don't the "professionals" in town know best? Those comments made at the assembly Monday night don't seem it good for the town or safety or traffic issues only is big negative , right? Is there any further discussion about this issue?

Townie , as an observation didn't someone say this at the assembly Monday night? The professionals in town seem to feel there are safety issues here for another left turn light on rt 38 at the mall. Plus, didn't someone say there may not be enough stacking lane room, only 300ft, Talk about cars backed up in the "fast lane". Sound alike more congestion and potential accidents.
