Three-Way Race for Council Set

Mayor John Button and his running mates will run as independents in the fall against the Republican and Democratic tickets.

As expected, Mayor John Button and running mates Randy Cherkas and Elaine Goralski filed petitions Tuesday .

The council race will be a three-way contest between ; ; and Button et al. There are three open seats on council.

In a release issued by the Republican ticket Tuesday night, Garwood said, "Our team is both humbled and honored by the confidence that Republican voters in Moorestown have shown through their support of our nomination to town council. We thank our friends, family, neighbors and supporters for all of their encouragement and promise to run an issues-oriented campaign that will make them proud.”

Palko added, "For too long, the people of Moorestown have had to stand on the sidelines as the issues facing our town are endlessly debated, our taxes go up, and more families and businesses are forced to move out of town. It’s time for a new direction, and our team is ready to lead the way.”

The following are unofficial results—because they don't include absentee or provisional ballots—from Tuesday's primary, provided by the township:

Republicans

  • Phil Garwood — 828 votes
  • Victoria Napolitano — 799 votes
  • Pete Palko — 782 votes

Democrats

  • Greg Newcomer — 528 votes
  • Brian Sattinger — 491 votes
  • Mark Hines — 464 votes

In a handful of Moorestown districts, the Burlington County Regular Republican Organization was challenged for seats on the County Committee. None were successful—including challenges from —with the exception of Lisa Caruso in District 20, who earned a spot on the county committee with 29 percent of the vote, edging out Regular Republican Mimi Warburton, who got 26 percent.
