Baker Elementary School Principal David Tate has been appointed to the position of director of special education, effective July 1, according to a release from Superintendent of Schools John Bach.
Tate will replace William Murphy who leaves after two years of service.
Murphy, a New Jersey retiree, was limited to a two-year term as interim director.

The director of special education is responsible for 500 students who are classified, as well as the day-to-day management of 74 teachers and child study team members, the release said.
“As most people know, special education in New Jersey in 2011 is a challenging environment frequently visited by fractious and litigious partisanship,” Bach said in the statement. “It is in the district’s long-term interest to maintain the calm, reassuring client-centered approach, which has been so successfully implemented by Dr. Murphy.

“Mr. Tate is the ideal candidate in terms of his aptitude, background, and district experience. He brings a record of unqualified success as a special education teacher, special education supervisor, assistant principal and principal. He truly understands the MTPS culture, and is indeed, already part of our districtwide family.”
A search for a new Baker principal will begin at the end of the month.
