Board Adopts 2011-12 School Calendar

Students will start school Sept. 8; graduation will be June 19.

After some debate about when students return from winter break, the Moorestown Board of Education unanimously approved the 2011-12 School Year Calendar Tuesday night.

Students will start school Sept. 8. Transition Day will be held Sept. 7. Graduation is planned for June 19. Teachers' first day back is Sept. 6.

“Our process brings together all of our constituent groups—Home & School, teacher representation and board representation,” said Superintendent John Bach.

Winter break will begin with an early dismissal on Dec. 23 with students returning to school Jan. 2.

“I know this went through a rather lengthy preparation process,” said board member David Weinstein. “I know there was long debate over giving off Jan. 2 vs. a four-day weekend Feb. 17-20. It seems to me that having school on the second, you’re not going to have kids in school. I think we should reconsider. It doesn’t make much sense to me.”

Board member Christina Zajac, a member of the calendar committee, said that parents preferred to have school on Jan. 2.

“The teacher representatives were comfortable with having a whole week of school that week,” she added.

“We deferred to the input of the parents,” Bach said. “That’s how we arrived at this recommendation.”

Spring Recess will be held April 6-13, with students returning to school on April 16.

In addition, two snow days have been built into the calendar—May 25 and 29. If no emergency closing days are used, students will have a five-day Memorial Day weekend. If one day is used, school will be in session for students and staff May 29. If two days are used, school will be held May 25 and 29. If more than two days are used school will be in session May 25, May 29 and Spring Recess will be shortened beginning with April 13.

Students will also have a four-day weekend Feb. 17-20.

The NJEA Convention will be held Nov. 10-11.
