BOE OKs Advertising at Athletic Fields

The Moorestown Board of Education approved a pilot program to sell banners to advertisers as a way of generating alternative revenue. What do you think?

Taking a page from the township's playbook, Moorestown School District will soon introduce advertising to a couple of its sports venues.

The board of education approved Tuesday a pilot program to sell banners to advertisers, which will then be installed at the high school football stadium and tennis courts for the fall sports season. The banners will be sold by the booster clubs affiliated with the various teams.

For now, the advertisements are confined to just those two locations, but business administrator Lynn Shugars said the program could be expanded in the future, depending on how successful it is.

"The idea being to see how much interest there is," she said. "It's all sort of being fleshed out."

Booster clubs for the various sports teams informed the district there were businesses that would be interested in advertising, which prompted the board to launch the pilot program.

Revenue from the sale of banners, which will cost approximately $1,000 for a whole season, will be split as follows: 50 percent to the sports club that sells the banner; 10 percent to the football booster club, which will be maintaining and installing the banners; and 40 percent to the district, to be put into a student fund for athletics and other programs.

Shugars said there is no cost to the district.

The township implemented a similar program this spring to sell banner advertisements for a number of sports fields, as well as field sponsorships.

Revenue from the township's sponsorship program will be split 50/50 between the township and sports clubs to be held in a “recreation trust account” and used for maintenance and improvements, as well as paying down the debt service for existing and future major recreation capital projects.
