The American Civil War: Pols and Generals Lecture Series presented by the Center for Civic Leadership and Responsibility wraps up with James E. Johnson, Adjunct Professor, History, Rutgers University Camden discussing the collective sacrifice and enormous legacy of colored soldiers– honed at Fort Wagner, Port Hudson, Olustee, Petersburg, Honey Hill, Chaffin’s Farm and other important battles.

In August 1864 President Lincoln remarked,

Take from us…the colored persons now serving us as soldiers, seamen, and laborers and we cannot longer maintain the contest…It is not a question of sentiment or taste, but one…which…by measurement…is more than we can lose, and live. Nor can we, by discarding it, get a white force in place of it.

Professional development credit available for educators.

Location: Civic Hall, inside the Connector Building
