Graduating seniors honored for academics, community service.

The Moorestown Home & School Association announced its scholarship recipients at its annual meeting Wednesday night.

The H&S awarded 12 scholarships to graduating seniors.

“We have a stellar group of students with us tonight,” said Scholarships Chair Farzaneh Daghigh. “Their academic and extracurricular achievements are extraordinary. Home & School is very proud to have these young men and women represent Moorestown as they further their education.”

The Home & School Association Scholarship Committee reviewed more than 60 applications before making its selection.

Winners of Outstanding Achievement Scholarships of $1,500 were:

  • Ji Hwan Park: Principal cellist in the MHS Orchestra, treasurer of the Interact Club, active member of the International Affairs Club, member of the Math Club and the Environmental Club. Received the Presidential Award for Community Service in 2009 and 2010 for her more than 400 hours of community service. Park earned the AP Scholar with Distinction Award and a National Merit Scholarship Program Letter of Commendation. She plans to attend Cornell and study in the university’s Hotel Administration School.
  • Pugh has volunteered nearly 6,000 hours during his four years at Moorestown High School. He is an EMT, president of the Interact Club, a class officer and won four Gold Presidential Service Awards. Pugh will be attending the University of Delaware to study business marketing and international relations.
  • Luke Saputelli: In addition to his academic success, Saputelli volunteers at the Reserve Mission in Camden and is a member of the Moorestown Crew team. He was active in the Honor and Service Society and the Interact Club. He was awarded two National Latin Awards. He will be attending the University of Pennsylvania. He is undecided about his major.
  • Emma Sauerwein: Sauerwein founded the MHS Film Club. She volunteered at , teaching residents how to communicate via the Internet. She also created “Video Life Stories” recording Evergreens residents' stories. In addition, she was a member of the Interact Club and the Honor and Service Society. She received the Presidential Spirit of Community Award and an Edward J. Bloustein Distinguished Scholar award. She will be attending Syracuse University’s S.I. Newhouse School of Communication where she will major in TV, radio and film.

 The Academic Excellence Scholarship was awarded to Victoria Lee. The $1,500 award is given to a student that excelled in the area of academics. Lee, who will attend Brown University and study engineering, has achieved a 4.5 GPA while participating in the Math Club and the International Affairs Club. She has been an active member of the Honor and Service Society and a member of the Teen Advisory Board.

 The Anne Yarrington Scholarship was awarded to Rebecca Cicalese. The $1,500 scholarship is given to a student who plans to become a teacher. Cicalese is a volunteer for the Moorestown First Aid and Emergency Squad and a member of the Moorestown and Cherry Hill Girls’ Ice Hockey teams. She has been a tutor and has been active in the Honor and Service Society. She will be attending Arcadia University.

The Clark Bucko Scholarship was awarded to Nicholas Argentieri. The $1,500 scholarship is awarded to a student that demonstrated a love of literature. Argentieri was a frequent contributor the Voice newspaper and the Nutshell Literary Magazine. He was also active in the Interact Club, the International Affairs Club and Big Brothers/Big Sisters. Argentieri will attend Rutgers where he plans to major in English.

The Joan Solow Scholarship was awarded to Christine Weng. The $2,000 scholarship is awarded to a student who excels in the fine arts. Weng is an All South Jersey Orchestra member and has been involved in the MHS Orchestra for four years and was a concert choir pianist her senior year. She was active in the French Club, the International Affairs Club, Model Congress and the Honors and Service Society. She plans on attending The College of New Jersey and majoring in biology.

Four $500 Special Recognition Scholarships, given to students nominated by faculty and staff members for their accomplishments throughout their high school careers as well as their involvement outside of the classroom, were also awarded to the following students:

  • Chelsea Beittel: Beittel is an active member of Project Democracy, Future Business Leaders of America, the Interact Club and the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. She will attend Burlington County College and major in environmental science.
  • Caroline Coriell: Coriell is a member of the Art Club and the Gay Straight Alliance. She will attend Fairleigh Dickinson University and major in psychology.
  • Alexandra Harbet: Harbet was a member of Natural Helpers, CASA, Speak Up, Big Brothers/Big Sisters and several musical productions. She will be studying music and writing at Randolph College.
  • Vera Hallowell: Hallowell spends her time on her family’s horse farm giving riding lessons to children with disabilities. She is also a member of the 4H Club. She plans on attending Burlington County College and major in business.
