How Did Moorestown School District Spend Your Money?

The state's Taxpayers' Guide to Education Spending is out. Find out how the district has been using your money.

Moorestown School District's per pupil spending has risen steadily over the last few years, increasing by roughly $500 each year.

According to information provided by the state Department of Education in its "Taxpayers' Guide to Education Spending," the budgetary per pupil cost—which encompasses staff salaries, supplies, legal fees, etc.—in Moorestown climbed from $12,593 in 2010-11, to $13,198 in 2011-12, to $13,740 for the 2012-13 school year. 

Based on the district's records, the per pupil spending for the revised 2012-13 budget dropped slightly to $13,474. Nexy year, the number is projected to be $14,175.

The increase looks a little more dramatic under "Total Spending Per Pupil," which factors in state expenditures on behalf of the school district, such as pensions and social security payments and debt service. According to the state, Total Spending Per Pupil went from $16,332 in 2010-11 to $17,417 in 2011-12. 

Of the $12,593 per pupil spending in 2010-11, $7,534 (roughly 60 percent) went for classroom instruction, which includes salaries and benefits of teachers; school supplies; and professional-educational, technical and other services purchased for classroom use, such as amounts paid for occupational, speech, and physical therapy, assembly speakers, and standardized subject exams. Spending on classroom instruction came to $7,934 in 2011-12, only increasing by $10—to $7,944—in 2012-13 (based on revised budget numbers provided by the district).

Moorestown's projected enrollment for the 2013-14 school year is 3,945, a slight decrease from the 4,069 students enrolled at the beginning of the current school year.
