About 100 first graders belted out love-themed tunes at Roberts Elementary School Friday afternoon.

About 100 students entertained their parents and teachers at Mary E. Roberts Elementary's annual Sweetheart Sing Valentine's-themed concert Friday.

Music teacher Laura Dishong said it can be a challenge to coax the students out of their shells to perform in front of an audience.

"When they finally do it, there's safety in numbers," she said. "Once they get in front of an audience and they get the applause, the light bulb goes off and they realize, 'Hey, this is fun.'"

Dishong, who prepares Roberts students for several other holiday concerts throughout the year, said she's fortunate to be able to put her students' talents on display.

"I'm very lucky that I get to do that," she said. "Not all the teachers get to show off the way I do."
