Sports Roundup: Girls' Lax Dominates, Boys' Golf Takes Down Top Team

A number of Moorestown High School sports teams are still alive in the playoffs, including the undefeated girls' lacrosse team.

It was a big week in sports, with the girls' lacrosse team continuing their dominating march through the playoffs and the boys' golf team notching a win against the No. 1 team in the state.

The girls (24-0) have defeated every team they've faced so far in this year's playoffs by double-digit margins. That goes for Shawnee, who they beat 19-8 on Thursday, and Notre Dame, who they crushed 20-3 on Tuesday.

"This team is playing extremely well. They're playing as a team," said head coach Deanna Knobloch. "They're peaking at the right time."

Though Knobloch acknowledged "there's always room for improvement," she said she has high expectations for the team as they continue their playoff run next week in the Group 3 State Final against Mendham at Hunterdon Central. .

Really, at this point anything less than a state title and a victory in the Tournament of Champions next month will be considered a disappointment for this program. But Knobloch has confidence in her girls.

"I've coached for 21 years. I've been lucky enough to coach a lot of phenomenal teams," she said. "(This team) is right up there."

The Tournament of Champions final is on Saturday, June 9.

, head coach Tim O'Reilly referred to perennial powerhouse Burlington Township as the "top dog" in the Liberty Division. And Burlington proved itself top dog in the state with a victory at the Tournament of Champions earlier this week.

But it was Moorestown (18-2) that came out on top when the two teams clashed in a final regular season match on Wednesday.

"I knew we had a chance to beat them at home," O'Reilly said. "I wasn't expecting to win ... It was real nice."

Moorestown defeated Burlington Township, which also claimed the Group 3 Sectional Title on Monday, by only the slimmest of margins: 155-156. But a victory is a victory.

With Moorestown returning all of its players but one next year, and Burlington Township returning all but two of its players, O'Reilly said, "It should be a good rivalry for quite some time."

The league tournament will be held next Wednesday at Rancocas Golf Club.
