'Thoroughly Modern' Musical Showcases OLGC Stars
The Moorestown Theater Company's production of "Thoroughly Modern Millie," starring all Our Lady of Good Counsel students, opens Friday.
Students at (OLGC) will once again get their moment in the spotlight this weekend when the curtain lifts on the ’s (MTC) production of Thoroughly Modern Millie.
MTC and OLGC have been in partnership since 2003, when the theater company began running the school’s drama club. It was an exciting experience for many of the students at the time (and still is), said Mark Morgan, producing artistic director, because many of them didn’t have theater experience or exposure to theater—or any kind of art/performance program—previously.
“For the first five or six years we were there (at OLGC), we were like the de facto music program for some of the students at the school,” he said. “A lot of them, this is their first exposure to live theater.”
Because of their fresh-faced approach to theater, many of the students bring a particular zeal to the shows, Morgan said. “There’s definitely kids who have a lot of enthusiasm about it because it’s so different from the school day.”
He’s hoping they draw on that enthusiasm this weekend for the premiere of Thoroughly Modern Millie, MTC’s , its .
The musical, a condensed version of the Tony Award-winning original, opens at 7:30 p.m. Friday, with a second performance at 7:30 p.m. Saturday. Both shows will be held at Our Lady of Good Counsel School.
Morgan said Millie is also, in a sense, a preview of the theater’s company adult production of 42nd Street, premiering this fall, because both feature tap dancing.
It’s a good show to catch “if you’re a tap fan,” he said, “because there just aren’t a lot of tap shows anymore.”
Tickets for Millie are $10 and can be purchased in advance on the MTC website or at the door.
