Boys' Soccer Defeats Cinnaminson 1-0

The Quakers swept the regular season series against the Pirates with a win Wednesday night.

Moorestown (5-5, 4-2) recorded its second win of the season against division rival Cinnaminson (4-5, 3-4) Wednesday night by a score of 1-0.

The lone goal of the game was scored by Alec Nicolai, assisted by Jacob Dowiak, early in the second half. The Quakers' defense was able to keep Cinnaminson off the scoreboard despite some excellent scoring chances throughout the game.

“Alec had a great game tonight. I’m real happy for him," said head coach Mike Sutcliffe. "It was a good goal and he had a lot of good play outside of the goal."

The Pirates had one cross hit the post and then had an open net after goalkeeper Nick Savino hit the ground, but still could not find the back of the net.

“Last time we played these guys hard we scored twice on some pretty nice goals," said Nick Russo. "We knew we had to get some better chances so we knew we were going to play hard, take our chances, and play defense after putting one in the net."

It's been an up and down year for the Quakers, winning two games in a row only once, and losing two games in a row twice this season. The Quakers have also had difficulty scoring goals in 2011, tallying just 11 goals in 10 games played so far.

“We did a good job tonight. Our defense played really well," said Sutcliffe. "We had two or three chances but got only one goal. For as much as we keep the ball forward and possess, which is what I want them to do, the goals are not coming."

Moorestown hosts division rival Burlington Township (6-2-2, 4-0-1) on Friday.

“Their team’s a little more physical than this team (Cinnaminson) and they’re very athletic, so our guys are going to have to be up to the challenge,” Sutcliffe said. “They’re undefeated in the division, so we can really hand them a loss and hopefully put ourselves in better shape too.”
