Boys' Soccer Rolls Over Central Regional in First Round of Playoffs

The Quakers scored four first half goals en route to a 6-1 win.

After struggling to score goals at the start of their season, the Quakers unloaded on Central Regional High School (8-6-2) Tuesday to reach the second round of the NJSIAA South, Group 3 Tournament.

The Quakers defeated Central 6-1. Moorestown has scored 22 goals over the last six games, in which the team has gone 5-0-1.

“We’re playing a lot better and the offense is clicking. That’s what we were lacking early in the season and I was so frustrated," head coach Mike Sutcliffe said. "We have been creating good chances all year, but the forwards weren’t finding the goal. They obviously are finding a way right now."

The Quakers scored four first-half goals on Tuesday, forcing Central Regional to make a change at goalkeeper well before halftime, and then added two more in the second half.

Sutcliffe was able to get some younger players experience in a playoff game with the large lead, especially backup goalkeeper J.T. Bretschneider.

“We played really well in the first half. Obviously it’s good to get everybody some rest and experience, especially Bretschneider, since he will be the goalie the next two years,” goalkeeper Nick Savino said. “It’s much better when we score 20 goals in a couple of games, instead of one every game and really have to stick it out in the back.”

Moorestown (10-6-1) goals were scored by Bode Adunbarin, Jacob Dowiak, Michael Handlan (2), Alec Nicolai and Nick Russo. Dowiak also added three assists in the game. Central's lone goal was scored by T.J. DenBleyker. Savino only played the first half for Moorestown, making one save. Bretschneider played the second half, making one save and allowing the one goal.

“He (Dowiak) has been on for the last three weeks," Sutcliffe said. "He’s picked his game up. In almost every game, except for the Eustace game, he has been the best player on the field and it was the same thing today. He’s our go-to guy and he’s the guy that does a lot for us in transition.”

The Quakers will face No. 1 seed Timber Creek on Friday in the second round. Moorestown will be looking to exact revenge on Timber Creek, a team that eliminated the Quakers in the third round of the NJSIAA South, Group 3 Tournament last year.
